There are quite a few benefits of growing older, such as raising a family, moving up the corporate ladder, and achieving some of our lifelong goals. Such endeavors make life an enjoyable journey, but some speed bumps can be encountered along the way. Some of these speed bumps can come in the form of unwanted changes in our bodies as we grow older. As an experienced dermatologist, I’m quite used to individuals seeking to turn back the hands of time to gain a more youthful appearance. Some of the desired changes are gender-specific, but one common complaint that we see at Lakes Dermatology of Las Vegas is the dreaded double chin. Fortunately for our patients, there is a new FDA-approved treatment, Kybella, which has been highly successful in melting away that stubborn fat.
I always stress to my patients that getting a double chin as they get older does not mean that they did anything wrong or have acted in an unhealthy way. There are quite a few reasons why the double chin can appear as a person gets older. Some of the culprits that may be responsible include just getting older, being overweight, and family genetics. The reality is that the skin in the neck area loses its elasticity as one gets older. This loss of elasticity then causes the skin to droop and sag, just like the skin on other parts of our body. However, a new treatment in the form of Kybella has come onto the market recently, and our clinic has used it to tremendous success.
Kybella is an injectable treatment that, when administered to adults, will destroy the fat cells that make up that extra waddle under the chin. The key ingredient in Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid. While the name of deoxycholic acid sounds scary, it is actually just a naturally occurring molecule found in all of our bodies that helps in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Kybella works by making the fat cells incapable of accumulating or storing fat, which destroys them. The treatment of Kybella results in a remarkable improvement to one’s profile as that double chin is essentially melted away. My patients at Lakes Dermatology of Las Vegas have been ecstatic with the change in their appearance, causing many of them to happily remark that they now look years younger.
